Headquarters Building, Vindolanda Roman Fort
The Headquarters Building at the centre of the stone fort is said to be the best example of an auxiliary 'Principia' in Britain. At the far end (south) was the Chapel of Standards with a sunken strong-room behind and offices on each side. The large space in front would have been a huge hall, capable of accommodating the entire garrison, who could be addressed by the commanding officer from a rostrum ('tribunal') at the west end. A deep well and a store rooms, one with a ventilated floor, complete the building.
Vindolanda Roman Fort

Vindolanda was a Roman auxiliary fort (castrum) just south of Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland. Located near the modern village of Bardon Mill, it guarded the Stanegate, the Roman road from the River Tyne to the Solway Firth. It is noted for the Vindolanda Tablets, among the most important finds of military and private correspondence (written with ink on wooden tablets) found anywhere in the Roman Empire.
