Commanding Officer's Residence, Vindolanda
The Commanding Officer's Residence or 'praetorium' was excavated in 1997/98 and lies in the centre of the stone fort, due east of the Headquarters Building NY7766 : Headquarters Building, Vindolanda Roman Fort. Its layout as a large courtyard-type house is best seen from the air. It provided accommodation for the family and servants, reception rooms for guests and had its own baths suite (foreground). A fine altar, dedicated to Jupiter and the 'Genius of the Household' was found in the internal courtyard.

On the site of the courtyard, a Christian Church was erected sometime after AD400, probably for Christian settlers using the site after the Romans had left.
Vindolanda Roman Fort
Vindolanda was a Roman auxiliary fort (castrum) just south of Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland. Located near the modern village of Bardon Mill, it guarded the Stanegate, the Roman road from the River Tyne to the Solway Firth. It is noted for the Vindolanda Tablets, among the most important finds of military and private correspondence (written with ink on wooden tablets) found anywhere in the Roman Empire.
