Entrance to Limehouse Basin, from the Thames
Limehouse Basin, or the Regents Canal Dock as it was sometimes known, houses Limehouse Marina. It is the point at which the Regents Canal (part of the Grand Union system) gave access to the Thames for canal vessels or, probably commoner, allowed Thames barges and lighters on the one hand and canal vessels on the other access to the same sheltered location where cargoes could be transhipped.
Regent's Canal
The Regent's Canal is a nine-mile man-made stretch of water connecting the Grand Union Canal at Little Venice to the River Thames. The first section of the canal from Little Venice was opened in 1816 and the final section at Limehouse Basin in 1820. The canal has 13 sets of locks.
River Thames
The River Thames rises at Thames Head in Gloucestershire on the slopes of the Cotswolds and flows generally eastward to its mouth near Southend in Essex. At 215 miles long it is one of the longest rivers in Britain, and the longest entirely within England. It is one of the most important rivers in Britain. LinkExternal link
