NS4276 : The channel of the Overtoun Burn

taken 12 years ago, near to Bellsmyre, West Dunbartonshire, Scotland

The channel of the Overtoun Burn
The channel of the Overtoun Burn
The course of the burn is artificially straight here (see NS4276 : The channel of the Overtoun Burn for another view). The channel was created in the 1890s in connection with the formation of a NS4276 : Former dam and lily pond. The dam provided water for a domestic hydro-electric scheme, which supplied electrical power to NS4276 : Overtoun House. See NS4276 : Remains of a turbine house for the details of the scheme.

Although the channel itself dates from the 1890s, work was carried out on this section of it in the 1970s; the gabions (rocks enclosed in wire mesh) date from that period. The photograph was taken from beside a wooden NS4276 : Footbridge over the Overtoun Burn. Traces of the original channel can be seen under that bridge; see also NS4276 : The channel of the Overtoun Burn, a little to the north.
