Sheffield Energy Recovery Facility, Bernard Road
The facility was opened in 2006 and is designed to incinerate up to 225,000 tonnes of municipal and trade waste per annum. The current throughput of waste at the facility is around 140,000 tons of waste. The incinerated waste generates energy in the form of heat which is distributed to over 140 buildings across the city via a district energy network. It also exports 19 megawatts of electricity to the National Grid (enough to power 22,600 homes). LinkExternal link - Sheffield Planning Committee minutes January 2010 (word document)
