Arlington Row, Bibury, Gloucestershire
These must be amongst the oldest dwellings in England. Having started life as wool stores in around 1380 they were converted into mill-workers' cottages 400 years later. They have been in the safe hands of the National Trust since 1949. At the left is the edge of the Rack Isle, a water meadow that (normally) floods in the winter. Its name is derived from the days when the nearby Arlington Mill was producing woollen cloth that was hung out to dry on racks on the isle. It is now valued as a habitat for plants and water birds.
