Famous pillbox on Helmscott hill near Cresswell
Whilst many WW2 pillboxes conform to a standard square or hexagonal format occasionally the Royal Engineer field surveyors were more inventive. Here at Druridge Bay, fearing a German invasion from Norway, the pillbox is disguised as a cottage with embrasures built into all the walls giving a good field of fire across the hill and beach.Photos of this pillbox appear in a number of text books on the subject!
