Blocked adit near Gonamena
Blocked adit near Gonamena
Though no expert - and happy to be corrected - I would suggest that the sturdy wooden panelling seen on this mound are to block off a former adit to the long abandoned mine workings which are much in evidence in this area.
(An "adit" is a horizontal entrance into a mine as opposed to a vertical shaft)
In the background can be seen the remains of a chimney also associated with the workings see SX2670 : Old mine chimney near Gonamena - also see SX2670 : Riders pass Pearce's Shaft ruins SX2669 : Jope's Shaft and chimney which are on the opposite (eastern) side of the valley.
