SS Shieldhall, Southampton Water
SS Shieldhall, Southampton Water
Approximate position as Shieldhall returns to the Eastern Docks following a four hour cruise to commemorate the centenary of the departure of SS Titanic for its date with destiny four days later. This is the stokehold with the two three-furnaced Scotch boilers burning heavy oil with Howden forced draught. The oil heaters and steam oil pumps are against the forward bulkhead to the left and the fan and its steam engine are on the fiddly grating overhead. There is a steam fire suppression system that is used following evacuation of the stokehold.
