The tall clocktower of the Athenĉum building dominates the view up King Street. The Athenĉum is a category A listed building dating from 1817 (LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link ) Historic Scotland Listed Building Report). The impressive porch, added on the front of the tower in 1859, is surmounted by the 'Wee Wallace' - a statue Scottish hero William Wallace (NS7993 : 'Wee Wallace').
