Royal Albert Dock and student accommodation at the University of East London
The Royal Albert Dock was constructed to the east of the earlier Victoria Dock and opened in 1880. It was even larger than the Victoria, with over three miles of quay, and an entrance to the Thames at Gallions Reach. The dock closed to commercial traffic along with the other Royal Docks in the 1980s. It is now used chiefly for watersports and as a rowing course. Situated between University Way and the Royal Albert Dock, the student apartments of the University of East London with their butterfly-wing roofs are a very prominent feature. When the Docklands Campus of the University of East London opened in 1999, it was the first new university campus built in London for over 50 years. The buildings were designed to maximise energy efficiency and were built on recycled soil.
