TQ2550 : East Walk

East Walk
East Walk
This area was originally the grounds of Reigate Lodge, a large 18th century mansion. The house was demolished in the 1930s and the land used for what is now Reigate College (see TQ2550 : Reigate College) and housing, for example Rushworth Road (see TQ2550 : Rushworth Road). However the surrounding walls and shrubbery were retained, giving some privacy to the houses built immediately behind them, East Walk being along this section. Old maps suggest that the walls here are more recent than the older sections along Church Street (see TQ2550 : Church Street) and Croydon Road, with the junction between Croydon Road and Church Street being widened, presumably at the time of the redevelopment of the site. Nevertheless the whole stretch of wall is locally listed.
