Cross-bedding in Torridonian Sandstone
Cross-bedding in Torridonian Sandstone
The sloping ridges in the face of the rock are cross-bedding, laid down by a stream flowing over the desert sands some thousand million years ago. The current was running from right to left and close examination of the ridges confirms that the rock is still the 'right way up', that is, it has not been overturned by later tectonic movements. In the background is a wooden shelter on the island's camp site.
