The A817 runs from its junction with the A814 at Faslane, to the A82 at Shantron. It was built in 1990 as a military road to get materials and people to the Naval base Faslane – hence its popular name “the Haul Road”. It is a two lane road with superb views to Loch Lomond on the east and the Clyde waterway to the west (eg NS2590 : View Towards Gare Loch).
