NY7146 : Rogue bench mark

taken 14 years ago, near to Alston, Cumbria, England

Rogue bench mark
Rogue bench mark
For context, see NY7146 : Doorway with unusual bench mark .
Presumably this stone has been reused during some renovation work, the normal orientation of a bench mark would be 90° to the right. A metal bolt, inserted next to the bar over the arrow, is characteristic of early bench marks made during the mid 19th century (types of bench mark are described here LinkExternal link ).
The building this is on dates from the 18th century LinkExternal link ; an OS map c.1860 shows a bench mark on it LinkExternal link .
