Derelict land at Garvel Point
The former Garvel shipyard, known locally as Siberia. Between the Clyde and James Watt Dock. Earmarked for housing and retail development.
Siberia
Siberia was the nickname given to George Brown's Garvel Shipyard which operated at Garvel Point until the company entered liquidation in 1983. The nickname stems from its exposed position and comparative remoteness (by road at least) from the other Lower Clyde yards.
Founded in 1900, Brown's built specialised craft such as grab dredgers, steam yachts, trawlers, tugs and coasters. The yard also built some military vessels, namely minesweepers.
The yard was located north of the James Watt Dock and west of the Great Harbour. Today (2012) the site is derelict and overgrown. No buildings or any other signs remain to show that a busy shipyard once occupied the site.
