A Rank of Salmon Putchers
A Rank of Salmon Putchers
Archaeological and documentary evidence reveal that there has been a continuing tradition of salmon fishing using fish traps, or fixed engines dating back to at least the 10th century. The methods used still endure in the estuary today and prove the longevity of traditional fishing practices in the Severn Estuary at least. However this traditional way of fishing is quickly being phased out with only one fishery still operating in this traditional way.
The use of basketwork fishtraps is a traditional method of fishing practised on the river Severn and its estuary for many years, especially the types known as putts and putchers which are peculiar and exclusive to the Severn estuary.
This photograph is possibly the last time this putcher rank was in use, owned by a family who can trace their salmon fishing past back over 300 years.
