The Bass Rock Lighthouse with gannets overhead
The lighthouse on the south side of the island was constructed in 1902 and automated in 1988. This volcanic plug in the Firth of Forth is the world’s largest single rock gannetry with around 150,000 birds during the breeding season. For an overall view of the Bass Rock and lighthouse, see NT6087 : The Bass Rock. This was taken from a small boat on the return trip from the Isle of May to North Berwick.
