Barbrook I - Stone Circle on Big Moor
Barbrook I - Stone Circle on Big Moor
Barbrook I is an embanked stone circle with a substantial stone cairn. It sits on a shelf of ground raised a little from the track, but lower than the moor behind it, so it cannot be viewed from either of the other circles to the north. here are 12 stones in a ring varying in diameter from 12.5 to 14.5 metres in an excellent example of a flattened circle, the bank is not a prominent feature. Only one stone rises above a metre in height, and it is quite markedly taller than the others. When the cairn above Barbrook I was excavated and restored in the early 1980's four carved stones were found. A rectangular slab with a cup and ring marking, a triangular slab with 4 cup marks along an edge, a single cup mark on small slab and a slab with 2 cups on one side and one on the other. All the stones are stored in the Weston Park museum in Sheffield. (Copyright 2007 - 2008
