NY6758 : What's beyond the fence?

taken 14 years ago, near to Lambley, Northumberland, England

What's beyond the fence?
What's beyond the fence?
At the south end of the Lambley Viaduct over the South Tyne on the old Haltwhistle to Alston railway (closed 1976), the way is barred by an impenetrable fence where a private house (the former Lambley station building) and garden occupies the old trackbed. For walkers on the South Tyne Trail this means dropping down the precipitous hillside by steps and steep path to resume the Trail 300 metres further on. For cyclists on the Pennine Cycleway (National Cycle Network route 68), this blockage is even more inconvenient. It requires a 4 km diversion by road, with 30 metres of descent to cross the South Tyne and 45 metres of ascent before a further descent at Bowden's Bank to regain the trackbed. For more information on the station (and the closure of the trackbed at this point) and a history of the railway line see LinkExternal link
