Entrance to former Spa Road station
Entrance to former Spa Road station
This is a historic location, unknown to most travellers on the railway out of London Bridge. Spa Road & Bermondsey station was the first terminus on the railway from Greenwich to London, opening in 1836, though superseded as terminus by London Bridge from 1838. What we see here is the entrance to slightly re-sited 1843 station, which remained in use until 1915. It retains the initials of the South Eastern & Chatham Railway, as it was known from 1899. The arches are now being used for storage and this photo is taken through the fence on Dockley Road.
