The Church of St Mary, Hale
St Mary’s Church is on Church Road, just outside the centre of Hale Village. It is situated on the site of a former chapel built in 1081.

The very early chapel was replaced by a new one during the 14th century; the present tower is from that period, but the main church has been altered over the centuries. In 1758 the old wattle and daub body of the church was demolished and rebuilt.

The last alterations that were done to the church were around 1971, but six years later in October 1977, the church suffered a devastating blaze which completely destroyed the roof and the interior, leaving only the sandstone shell. After rebuilding, St Mary’s was reconsecrated in 1980.
