View towards the Pen Ponds from the north-east
The band of red-tinged vegetation running diagonally across the picture is composed chiefly of rushes (Juncus), and marks the course of the Pen Pond outfall ditch. The oak woodland to the left of the ditch is Duchess Wood - one of a number of plantations dating from Lord Sidmouth's time as Ranger of the Park.
Richmond Park is a National Nature Reserve.
