Kildalton High Cross in the churchyard
The ancient Kildalton Cross is to be found in the churchyard of the ruined Kildalton church (see NR4550 : Kildalton High Cross from the West and NR4550 : Kildalton High Cross from the East). It dates from the C8th AD, making it about 1300 years old. It is in a remarkable state of preservation and has many interesting carvings with biblical references.
Kildalton High Cross
The magnificent Kildalton High Cross is 1300 years old and was possibly carved by the same school of artists as produced a similar cross on Iona.
The carvings include numerous references to the bible, such as Cain murdering Abel, David killing the lion, the sacrifice of Isaac, peacocks feasting on grapes, four more lions, and the Virgin and Child.
There are also various hemispherical bosses and entwining snakes.
