NR4550 : Kildalton High Cross in the churchyard
taken 12 years ago, 4 km SSW of Ardtalla, Islay, Argyll And Bute, Scotland
The magnificent Kildalton High Cross is 1300 years old and was possibly carved by the same school of artists as produced a similar cross on Iona.
The carvings include numerous references to the bible, such as Cain murdering Abel, David killing the lion, the sacrifice of Isaac, peacocks feasting on grapes, four more lions, and the Virgin and Child.
There are also various hemispherical bosses and entwining snakes.
