NS3974 : Dumbarton Rock: western side of the base

taken 14 years ago, near to Dumbarton, West Dunbartonshire, Scotland

Dumbarton Rock: western side of the base
Columnar jointing is apparent here, as it is on the eastern side of the Rock: NS4074 : Columnar jointing at Dumbarton Rock; see that item for further explanation.

Unlike the eastern side, the area in the present photograph is tidal; zonation of lichens is well seen here, with the so-called grey zone above the orange zone, which is in turn above the black zone. Below that, lichens give way to green algae.

The NS3975 : Remains of Ballantine's Distillery are visible behind the edge of the Rock; further to the left are some of the NS3974 : Buildings on Sandpoint.
Dumbarton Rock and Castle :: NS4074

The Rock is a volcanic plug, and it has a long history as a fortified site. For further information, see the Geograph article "Dumbarton Rock and Castle": Link
