NS4074 : Pole with old pulley wheel

Pole with old pulley wheel
Pole with old pulley wheel
For a closer look at the wheel at the top of this metal pole, see NS4074 : Pulley (detail). Note a dark line on the beach, starting some way behind and to the right of the pole, and receding directly from the photographer's position, heading towards the fence on the raised area at the top of the beach. That line is significant; it is the sole remnant of the outer edge of a timber pond: NS4074 : Remains of a timber pond. The pulley may have been used in connection with that timber pond.

Page 16 of the booklet "The Blackburn: Dumbarton's Aircraft Factory" (Alan M Sherry, 2008) shows a photograph of the foreshore from about 1946, when the area was being used by that factory; what may be this pole is visible near the lower left corner of the picture. While it is possible that the pulley was a surviving relic of the earlier timber pond, it seems more likely that it was installed here in connection with the Blackburn factory and its activities on the shore.

Some NS4074 : Posts on the shore are also visible in that 1940s photo; although they are located in what had earlier been a timber pond, those posts may likewise date from a later period.

The higher ground in the middle distance, on the right, is the location of Dumbarton Rock Bowling Club; the hedge surrounds their bowling green.
Remains of a timber pond

The outline of a timber pond can be discerned on Dumbarton foreshore, just to the east of Dumbarton Rock. It is depicted on early OS maps from the second edition (1897) onwards.
