Remains of a timber pond
From the foreground, a dark line can be seen receding in the direction of a distant pole. There used to be a timber pond here, and that line corresponds to its outer boundary. Between the appearance of the OS maps that were surveyed in 1897 and c.1939, the shoreline changed considerably, as did the form of the timber pond. Nevertheless, the pond's outer boundary remained fixed throughout that period.

The dark line shown here is the most visible of the remnants of the timber pond, but it is not the only one. This picture was taken from what was the south-western corner of the timber pond, and another line, much more indistinct, heads left from this point. On satellite imagery, other lines corresponding to these old boundaries can be picked out (if you know precisely where to look by reference to the old maps), but they are harder to see; likewise, they can be picked out when there in person, although they are much less obvious than the one shown in the present photograph: see NS4074 : Remains of a timber pond.

The pole in the distance carries a pulley wheel: NS4074 : Pole with old pulley wheel. Since the pole is located just outside the line of the outer edge of the timber pond, the pulley may have been used in connection with that pond; alternatively, it may date from a later period, when Dumbarton's Blackburn aircraft factory used this part of the shore.

For the hills in the background of the photo, see NS4074 : The shore near Dumbarton East.
Remains of a timber pond

The outline of a timber pond can be discerned on Dumbarton foreshore, just to the east of Dumbarton Rock. It is depicted on early OS maps from the second edition (1897) onwards.
