Snake Pass Area - Derbyshire
Snake Pass Area - Derbyshire
A view along the wall of the Derwent Dam through the west gate from road near to the Fairholmes car park, picnic area, cafe and visitors' centre. Although its castellated stone appearance gives it the appearance of being a solid masonry dam, it is in fact a clay-cored/earth embankment with a stone veneer that is holding back the water in the Derwent reservoir. Against the left-hand wall, immediately inside this gate (although not visible here) is a stone plaque commemorating the feat and losses of the 617 RAF Squadron (The Dambusters). The administrative boundary between Sheffield Metropolitan District (S. Yorks) and Derbyshire passes immediately in front of the more distant Eastern Tower.
