The church serves a scattered agricultural parish of 4,000 acres with a population of about 230, located in Western Herefordshire 4 km on the English side of the border with Wales.
The church's foundation stone was laid on June 12th 1849. The Bishop of Hereford consecrated the church on September 3rd 1853. This led to the formation of the parish of Hardwicke shortly afterwards. Hardwicke had previously been part of the parish of Clifford.
