ST3186 : The gondola leaving the western end of Newport Transporter Bridge
taken 12 years ago, near to Maes-Glas, Newport/Casnewydd, Wales
Since refurbishment of the bridge in 1985, infrequent open days were held at the Transporter Bridge allowing the public access the high level walkway.
This gave the opportunity to enjoy views over Newport and the River Usk and to get close up and familiar with the workings of this magnificent structure.
Since 1964 when two other bridges have been built across the River Usk, use of the bridge has fallen by 80%, and although it is part of the local road network it currently (June 2012) only operates for a restricted number of hours.
There are plans to develop it as a tourist attraction and give more frequent access to the walkway.
These plans came to fruition in 2013 when increased access was made available during summer months.
