SR250 Tidal Turbine moored at Hatston Pier
This is the Scotrenewables (SR250) 250kw tidal turbine. This turbine was built by Harland & Wolff in Belfast, construction started in July 2010 and it arrived in Orkney in March 2011. The steel tube is 33metres long and has a diameter of 2.3 metres. Below the tube are 2 rotors that can be lowered when in operation and raised when being transported. The SR250 has a transport draught of 4 metres and an operational draught of 12 metres
When deployed the turbine is anchored by cables to the seabed and can respond to changes in the direction of the current.
At the time of the photograph the turbine had recently returned from deployment at the European Marine Energy Centre’s tidal test site at the Fall of Warness which lies between Eday and Muckle Green Holm (Grid ref HY 5329).
Previously, December 2011, the turbine had undergone tow testing north of Kirkwall harbour and had achieved its full rated power of 250 kW. A further phase of testing was carried out at Fall of Warness in April 2012. The SR250 completed an onsite fully grid connected test and became the world’s first floating tidal turbine to achieve export of power to the National Grid. Electricity was conveyed by undersea cable to the EMEC onshore facility at Caldale on Eday.

There is a new development of business/industrial units at HY434127 which is intended for renewable energy enterprises.
