Falmouth Docks - MV Athena
The MV Athena, now registered in Madeira, originally entered service in 1948 as the 11650 GRT transatlantic liner MS Stockholm of the Swedish America Line. This vessel became a household name on 25-7-1956 when she collided with the Italian liner Andrea Doria in fog near the Nantucket Shoals Lightship. The Stockholm survived despite having her bow sheared off but the pride of the Italian fleet capsized and sank.
In 1994 she was purchased by an Italian company and rebuilt on the original ice-strengthened hull as a 16,144 GRT cruise ship with a modern profile. The Gotaverken diesels were replaced with a pair of 7500 horsepower Wartsila diesels good for 17 knots. She can carry 550 passengers.
