North Shields Fish Market
The Tynemouth RNLI North Shields Lifeboat (Severn class, 17-20, 'Spirit of Northumberland') can be seen at its mooring on the right. There have been lifeboats on the river Tyne since 1790 when the world's first purpose-built lifeboat 'Original' was stationed nearby. The RNLI established a station at Tynemouth in 1862 which has 29 volunteer crew members who come from all walks of life. Two lifeboats are in operation: the Severn class all weather lifeboat 'Spirit of Northumberland' (shown in the photo) and a D class in-shore lifeboat, 'Mark Noble'.
