Torcross and Slapton Sands
Taken from the South Devon Coastal Path, the photograph shows part of the village of Torcross and Slapton Sands. Slapton Sands was used in April 1944 as an exercise for American troops due to its similarity to the D-Day Normandy beaches (Operation Tiger). Unfortunately, the exercise was intercepted by German E-Boats and 749 American troops died in the attack, more than were to be lost on Utah beach on D-Day. A Sherman tank, recovered from the bay, stands in Torcross car park as a memorial to those troops who lost their lives.
