National Waterways Museum, Ellesmere Port
Although intending to visit water mill sites in Cheshire, I decided my friend could probably use a couple of hours at this excellent and important inland waterways museum. In this view the chimney, hydraulic power station and hydraulic accumulator are seen to the left in front of the Island Warehouse. This latter contains the main museum displays. To the right is the toll house alongside the broad and narrow locks. A wooden crane jib intrudes on the right.
The steam pumps in the hydraulic power station are of national importance as one of the very few examples of this type of installation (Tower Bridge is another). Hydraulic power was the 'electricity' of its day and many dock complexes had their own systems.
