Memorial to John Barr Cumming (detail)
Memorial to John Barr Cumming (detail)
This is one of a couple of tall monuments that stand side by side just to the west of the small car park within Greenock Cemetery. These are evidently the ones that are referred to in entry № 3 in the "Greenock Cemetery Walks" booklet (see the end-note).

The memorial shown in this photograph commemorates John Barr Cumming (1792-1860), Lloyds Surveyor of Shipping, who was born in nearby Port Glasgow, and who died here in Greenock; also, his London-born wife Janet Ponler (1802-1863), and various descendants. There is additional text on the back of the monument.

According to the Mercantile Navy List of 1850, John Barr Cumming and Richard Robertson had been appointed Surveyors of Shipping for "Glasgow, Greenock, and the Ports in the Clyde".

As shown here, the top of the memorial is decorated with allegorical figures representing local industry. The sculptor was a local man, the Greenock-born Charles Stevenson (1821-1879), who was also responsible for William Marshall's memorial, which is located elsewhere in the same cemetery.

The 1857-58 Post Office directory for Greenock contains a full-page advertisement for Charles Stevenson's "Sculpture and Photographic Establishment, Cemetery Gate, Greenock", which was "situated in a clear and quiet locality, free from the smoke and haze of the Town".
