NS2676 : Memorial to Robert Baine

Memorial to Robert Baine
Memorial to Robert Baine
Commemorated here are Robert Baine, his wife Jean Bannatyne, and their daughter Euphemia Harvey. Robert was an agent for the Bank of Scotland, and he died in 1849.

Facing this memorial across a path is a NS2676 : Memorial to Walter Baine. Walter served as Provost of Greenock and as the local MP, and he and this Robert Baine (the bank agent) were partners in the firm Messrs Baine and Johnstone, merchants; both of them were prominent in local civic life. The Robert Baine whose memorial is shown in the present photograph is therefore almost certainly one and the same as the Robert Baine who served as Greenock's first Provost, taking that office in 1833.
Greenock Cemetery
The cemetery, which is laid out on Bow Hill, opened in 1846.
