Looking down from the very top rear steps of the tower.
The red-bricked barrack block was a 1940 addition to the original tower when it was again re-vamped to include more modern guns, the four storey battery observation post, as well as searchlights.
Interestingly, this tower was possibly the first to have a new type of gun. The quick firing 6 pounder twin mounts were fitted in the summer of 1940 to combat German E-boats trying to enter the Medway Estuary, upstream of which is Chatham dockyard.
The concrete pathway one had railings..
Grain :: TQ8876

Grain is a small village and the only settlement of any size on the Isle of Grain ( Link ), on the Hoo Peninsula of northern Kent. The village lies on the eastern coast at the end of the B2001.

Grain Tower

Built in 1855, the fort guarded Sheerness port and has been heavily modified since, becoming a point for the boom defence preventing enemy ships entering the port. Originally, the fort had three gun emplacements, two periods of modification left it with just the one six pound QF position for attacking high speed torpedo boats, and a smaller 4.7'' gun. The ominous Battery observation post was added with this later.
The fort is accessible by foot at low tide, it is about half a mile offshore.
