SO8318 : A hidden gem (but now available for rent)
taken 12 years ago, near to Gloucester, Gloucestershire, England
A hidden gem (but now available for rent)
It appears many residents of Gloucester today are unaware of the importance of this white painted building in Westgate Street whose shop front is now empty and available for rental. In the English Civil War this old building, then known as the Judges House, was the HQ of Parliamentarian Colonel Massey during the siege of Gloucester in 1643. Even today, the fine gabled front of this magnificent dwelling exists but lies hidden on the western side of Maverdine Lane (the narrow entrance is just visible centre-right). This house has been described as "the finest and largest urban timber framed building in Britain".
