The grid covers two Archimedes' screws; the channel at the side is a fish pass, to allow the passage of eels and other fish to avoid the screws.
Bedford's new hydro-electric power plant
A small generator, commissioned in June 2012, to provide power from two Archimedes' screws placed in the line of the old boat slide on the Great Ouse in Bedford. The power generated will be used to light amenity areas by the river, with excess being sold. It was opposed by some locals on the grounds that it would spoil the amenity of the area, but it is quite a small shed, makes only a quiet hum, and has not affected the surroundings to any great extent. When both screws are running it will produce about 160000 kwh a year, save 70t of CO2 emission and at a cost of about 500000 will have a pay-back time of about 15 years.
