Memorial to Sir Robert Tyrwhitt

Sir Robert Tyrwhitt (1526 - 1581)son of William Tyrwhitt of Kettelby, Sheriff of Lincoln, married Elizabeth Oxenbridge (1529 - 1589) who was related to the Etchingham family of Sussex. The couple had 22 children, all of whom are shown as weepers on the tomb, several died as babies. The tomb features a strange wild man or Wodehowse covered in hair
Sir Robert was involved in the suppression of the Northern Rebellion of 1569, leading 250 of his tenantry with the army.
Elizabeth is famous for writing a prayerbook - she was an educated woman who spent much time at court.
The motto is "Temps Esprou Verite" - Time Tryeth Truth.
The tomb of their grandson Robert is in the sanctuary.
