Stell, Falstone
"Stell" is derived from the old Norse word, meaning circular stone walled shelter for sheep, and is a Northumbrian word for sheepfold.

This sculpture by Colin Welbourn installed in 2008 commemorates in stone the very warm expression of welcome that is typical of Falstone. It is inspired by the area's rich natural and cultural heritage and is also a lasting memorial and record of places now submerged beneath Kielder Water when the dam opened in 1982.

Within the enclosing wall can be seen a bench with stone cushions, steel throws with patterns designed by local people to reflect what is important to them, both past and present, and a corner of the rug which commemorates the settlements which were drowned by the formation of Kielder Water.
