Floor of Stell, Falstone
"Stell" is derived from the old Norse word, meaning circular stone walled shelter for sheep, and is a Northumbrian word for sheepfold.

This sculpture by Colin Welbourn installed in 2008 commemorates in stone the very warm expression of welcome that is typical of Falstone. It is inspired by the area's rich natural and cultural heritage and is also a lasting memorial and record of places now submerged beneath Kielder Water when the dam opened in 1982.

Within the enclosing wall, the rug shows a mosaic map and the names of the settlements which were drowned by the formation of Kielder Water.
