Guillemots guarding chick, Bempton Cliffs
Guillemots guarding chick, Bempton Cliffs
No warm cosy nest for the guillemot chick! The adults incubate their single egg on a bare rock ledge on a cliff face, such as this one at Bempton. Eggs hatch after around 30 days. About 20 days after hatching the chick leaves the ledge and even though it cannot fly, it glides down to the sea with the male parent alongside. The chicks can dive as soon as they hit the water.
