India Mill, Darwen
With its 300 foot high chimney which was inspired by the campanile (bell tower) in St Mark’s Square Venice, India Mill is Darwen’s most distinctive landmark; this view was taken from the path below the Jubilee Tower on Darwen Hill, above the town.
The mill, a Grade II listed building has been described (Link
) as the most important textile building in North East Lancashire and was constructed during the period 1859 to 1871. The actual building was completed by the mid 1860s, but all the machinery was not installed until 1871.
The mill closed in 1991. It is now in use as a business centre having been split into smaller units.
