R6835 : Castles of Munster: Knockainy, Limerick

taken 13 years ago, near to Knockainy, Co Limerick, Ireland

Castles of Munster: Knockainy, Limerick
Castles of Munster: Knockainy, Limerick
There were apparently two castles at Knockainy, one called Black Castle, the other White Castle. The former was held by the earls of Desmond, the latter occupied by their stewards the O'Gradys. It's uncertain which one this four storey 36 foot high ruin is, but it has a spiral stair in the NE corner, rooms over the entrance in the east wall, and latrines on the second and fourth storeys in the SW corner.
