Castles of Munster: Sheanmore, Waterford (1)
Sheanmore (or Shean More) is a FitzGerald tower whose upper room opens onto an unusual arrangement of double bartizans on the NW corner. This upper room has a fireplace, and is reached by a stair from one of the ground floor window embrasures. The castle was burnt in 1570 by the Earl of Ormond, and in 1584 it was granted to Sir Walter Raleigh after Maurice FitzGerald was forfeited. Raleigh leased it to Thomas Colthurst, then in 1598 it was occupied by the Duffs, and by 1640 it was held by Thomas Jackson.
