NS7353 : Cadzow Castle remains
taken 12 years ago, near to Ferniegair, South Lanarkshire, Scotland
Cadzow Castle was known as 'The Castle In The Wood of Hamilton' when first built. Date of construction is not clear but architectural details suggest a date of 1500 to 1550. Besieged by forces loyal to the deposed Mary Queen of Scots in 1579, Cadzow sustained massive structural damage and was never rebuilt. The picturesque remains of the castle were incorporated into a formal landscape in the 1700s. Stabilisation measures were superficial and did not address any of the underlying structural problems and now the walls have begun to slump. Historic Scotland is undertaking a long-term stabilisation project to sustain the site.
