Deal Castle entrance
Deal Castle entrance
Looking towards the castle entrance form the western, landward side. The castle was built between 1539 and 1540 on the orders of Henry VIII to counter the threat of invasion from Catholic France and Spain. It was never to serve this purpose and apart from a siege during the Civil War, never took part in any military action. Since 1951 it has been government-owned, currently by English Heritage.
