Newark, Notts (Riverside)
From the quayside adjacent to "The Wharf" car park a feast of interesting things vie for the observer's attention including "The Castle Barge" pub in a former grain barge - originally constructed in 1923 and converted into its present form in 1980; the impressive premises of W.N. Nicholson & Sons Ltd (Engineers and Agricultural Implement Manufacturers between 1858-1968) with their conical roof and finally the two rectangular malting buildings. The nearest one, known as The Kiln, was bought by Samuel Hole Jnr in 1874 as a means of setting his son James up as an independent maltster. This malting eventually became a chocolate warehouse but in 1992, after it was gutted by fire, its shell was preserved until 1997 when it was eventually fitted out as offices and the large gantry, for use in loading and unloading barges, was resurrected. This latter restoration presumably being for heritage purposes too?
